Behavioral Responses of Bufo Arenarum Tadpoles to Odonate Naiad Predation

چکیده
—In the presence of predators, anuran tadpoles often exhibit behavioral plasticity, which in turn reduces predation risk. We evaluated indirect effects of odonate larva predation on activity of Bufo arenarum tadpoles. We reared intact and tail-damaged larvae in three different predator treatments: (1) caged predators fed tadpoles; (2) caged predators that were starved; and (3) no predators. Both intact and damaged tadpoles were significantly less active when exposed to predator cues. There were no differences in activity between tadpoles with damaged and intact tails, however significant differences were observed between fed and starved predator treatments. Our results are consistent with other studies that have shown bufonid tadpoles reduce activity when exposed to predator cues and address a novel contribution of southern-hemisphere bufonid, expanding the knowledge of that family in ecological experiments.

Water-balance response of Rhinella arenarum (Hensel, 1867) tadpoles to graduated increase in environmental osmolarity.
The water balance and the upper limit of osmotic tolerance of premetamorphic Rhinella arenarum larvae (Gosner's stage 26) was evaluated after semistatic incubation in electrolyte (NaCl) and non-electrolyte (mannitol) media following a protocol of progressively increased osmotic pressure. Wet and dry weights were measured to calculate the water content as a derived variable indicative of the hyd...

The presence of corticotropin-releasing factor-like material in the intermaxillary glands was studied by immunocytochemical techniques during the metamorphosis of Bufo arenarum. The intermaxillary glands appeared at stage XV (midprometamorphosis) with CRF-like material slightly immunoreactive. These glands are located posterior to the premaxillae and between the nasal capsules in the roof of th...
متن کاملCAS role in the brain apoptosis of Bufo arenarum induced by cypermethrin.
CAS might have a key role in the apoptosis induced by toxins, acting as anti-apoptotic factor, stimulating the cellular proliferation and the cell contact stabilization. To start to elucidate their role in the brain apoptosis of Bufo arenarum induced by cypermethrin (CY), the expression patterns of CAS and several cell adhesion molecules (CAMs) were established. Bufo arenarum tadpoles of the co...
متن کاملMismatched anti-predator behavioral responses in predator-naïve larval anurans
Organisms are adept at altering behaviors to balance the tradeoff between foraging and predation risk in spatially and temporally shifting predator environments. In order to optimize this tradeoff, prey need to be able to display an appropriate response based on degree of predation risk. To be most beneficial in the earliest life stages in which many prey are vulnerable to predation, innate ant...
متن کاملInfluence of ammonium nitrate on larval anti-predatory responses of two amphibian species.
Sublethal effects of toxicants can upset normal behavioural responses to predators, leading to increased predation. For example, sensory capabilities can be impaired by toxicants, leading to difficulty in detecting predators or other threats. Alteration of locomotor abilities by pollutants can also explain the difficulty of tadpoles to escape from predators. Here we assess the effects of a nitr...
